Apple Watch Series 9: watchOS 10
One thing is sure about the Apple Watch Series 9: it will come with watchOS 10. Expect a new feature and a few new watch faces—possibly a pair exclusive to the next model. However, this year’s update may be more comprehensive than usual.
Mark Gurman, watchOS 10 “will be the focus” of Apple’s 2023 watch plan, providing “bigger enhancements, including an updated interface.” He said watchOS 10 “will tell you most of what you need to know about the Apple Watch in 2023,” implying that the hardware changes will be limited compared to the Series 8.
Apple Watch Series 9: Rumored New Features
The Apple Watch Series 9 isn’t expected to be a significant upgrade over last year’s models, which saw the debut of the Apple Watch Ultra, which included a larger screen, a more challenging titanium build, and an Action button.

Action button
Apple unveiled the all-new Apple Watch Ultra last year and a bewildering array of capabilities and components. The Apple Watch Series 9 had a more durable design, flat corners, a slightly larger display (49mm vs 45mm on the Apple Watch Series 8), and an unexpected new feature: the Action button.
The Action button is on the opposite side of the Digital Crown and could easily fit on the Apple Watch Series 9. On the Ultra, you can program it to perform specific tasks like a timer, workout, or flashlight, which would be a fantastic enhancement to the current Apple Watch design.
S9 chip
You’ll see a new chip when you look at the tech specs for each new Apple Watch. The S8 chip is found in the Series 8, the S7 in the Series 7, and the S6 in the Series 6. The only oddity is that they’re all the same chip with various names.
While the S6 promised a 20% performance jump over the Series 5, teardowns show that the S7 and S8 are rebranded versions of the same CPU, despite Apple’s explicit rejection of any sort of speed advancements. The S9, on the other hand, is supposed to change that, with a design based on the A15 that boosts performance and battery life and possibly a Neural Engine embedded into the chip.

New sensors
Apple has been working on a non-invasive method of monitoring glucose levels without additional equipment for years. A secret team within Apple has completed numerous “major milestones” in the project, and the feature is now at the “proof of concept” level.
However, it is unlikely to be in this year’s watch and may be several years away. An electrodermal activity (EDA) sensor for monitoring stress levels and a bioimpedance sensor for measuring body composition could also be included.
Microled Display
There have been numerous reports over the years regarding Apple potentially employing MicroLED displays on various products. Still, the most credible point to the Apple Watch is the first item to make the conversion. After all, the Apple Watch was the first device to include an OLED screen (years before the iPhone), so it’s safe to assume that Apple will launch its MicroLED screen on the Apple Watch as well.
The benefits are compelling, as MicroLED is thinner, brighter, higher resolution, and more efficient than even OLED. The most recent speculations claim that the first microLED watches will not be available until 2024, although we’re hoping for an earlier release.
