Foldable OLED From LG Display: I was fascinated but unimpressed when we first started seeing foldable device concepts a few years ago. Early prototypes frequently resembled experiments since the bendy displays appeared flimsy and they were frequently big. There were also wrinkles.
Thankfully, in just a few years, display technology has advanced significantly. That was especially clear at LG Display’s pavilion at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), where the company displayed two new mobile OLED concepts: a 17-inch laptop/tablet and an 8-inch gadget that resembles a smartphone but can fold in two directions. Although it’s not the first foldable tablet we’ve seen, the 17-inch gadget from LG Display is “nearly fully crease-free.” When the tablet was fully extended, it was really challenging to see the seam even though we looked at it rather carefully. Additionally, there were no rippling or gaps, which are common with foldable. The display was also tested for up to 50,000 folds, according to LG, so it should be fairly sturdy.
The other idea is something that LG Display officially refers to as the “360-degree Foldable OLED.” It’s an 8-inch display that folds in both directions and looks a lot like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. You can therefore fold it closed, or you can fold it outwards, creating a sort of tent form with the two displays. Both of these configurations are possible.
According to LG Display, these “360-degree” capabilities might potentially enable a future device to be utilized in a variety of various modes. It is intriguing to consider how you may use a phone when it is folded in the opposite direction from how it is normally folded because this would depend not only on the manufacturers of the hardware but also on the developers of the apps.
LG claims that it has also delivered on the promise of a more resilient display, which is necessary for two-way folding to be possible. The company claims that it is new 360-degree foldable has been tested to withstand 200,000 folds and is more durable than other foldable devices that are currently available on the market.
LG Display has demonstrated that a device with two-way folding capabilities may not be as far off as we believe it is, despite the fact that we do not yet know for certain whether or not businesses such as Samsung would pursue the development of such phones.
