In terms of its stated goals—to teach us about the first Witcher and define the Conjunction—Blood Origin is only partially successful. Although the former is handled adequately, the Conjunction is mostly overlooked until it actually takes place, and even then it takes a back seat to the movie’s explanation of how everything got started.
It’s a shame, because the advent of people and monsters on the Continent after the Conjunction could have provided the setting for a richer story.
Despite its potential, Blood Origin frequently degenerates into kitsch, cringeworthiness, or melodrama. Exciting fantasy programmes, like The Witcher, have a diverse cast of characters who, at first glance, may appear to be stereotypical heroes and villains but who eventually prove themselves to be more nuanced than that.
Blood Origin aims for this, but ultimately fails. The antagonists’ motives come off as undeveloped and, as a result, the heroes are able to easily overcome them. Compared to songs like “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher,” the Lark’s ballads serve more as filler for exposition than as entertaining.
Your interest in Blood Origin will be determined by how much you care about the characters and events in The Witcher universe, as well as how much you buy into the game’s sloppy narrative.
