Google’s Pixel 7 does not reinvent the wheel. It’s a sleek and refined improvement of the Pixel 6 from 2021. The good news is that we already strongly recommend that model and its less expensive brother, the Pixel 6a, and that holds for the latest model and its more budget companion, the Pixel 7a.
Here, you get the finest Android experience imaginable, Google’s Tensor-driven smarts, a fantastic camera system, and a few tiny upgrades that solve the predecessor’s minor flaws (yes, the fingerprint sensor is considerably superior).
But (and there is a big but), this one costs £599 in total, whereas the very similar Pixel 7a costs £449. Is it worth an extra £150 for iterative upgrades? That is the crucial question.
Whichever model you choose, we believe the Pixel lineup is the way to go for anyone looking for an Android upgrade without the annoying bloatware found on some other devices.
The stability and smoothness of Android 13 are enough to make even the most devoted iPhone diehard reconsider switching. While Google’s handsets still account for a small portion of all smartphones on the market, that number is growing faster than other brands, and we can report that we’ve seen an increasing number of Pixel devices in the hands of our fellow commuters (it helps that the camera bar distinguishes them!).
After six months of testing, we still believe the new Pixel 7 is the most excellent Android smartphone for most people, particularly if you don’t want the larger display, slightly greater battery, or more powerful cameras of the Pixel 7 Pro.
However, there isn’t much difference between this and the older Pixel 6, which is significantly cheaper to buy reconditioned, or the newer Pixel 7a, the starting point we’d recommend for bargain hunters in 2023. Finding the Pixel 7 at a significant discount is also possible, so it’s worth looking around for the best deal.
