Twitter is relaxing its advertising regulations to make it easier for companies that sell cannabis products to promote their brands on the platform. As a result of these developments, Twitter has become the first major social media network in the United States to open its doors to cannabis advertising.
According to an announcement made by the firm in a blog post, “Twitter is going to allow advertisers to promote brand preference and educational cannabis-related content going forward.” This applies to CBD, THC, and other cannabis-related products and services.
Even while the move would make it possible for businesses that sell cannabis products to advertise their operations, there will still be some limitations placed on what may be included in advertisements for those enterprises. With the exception of particular CBD products, advertisements are not permitted to “directly promote or propose the sale of cannabis,” as Axios explains.
Who can be targeted with advertisements relating to cannabis is restricted not just by age but also by geography and location-related factors.
This is the most recent instance in which Twitter, under the leadership of Elon Musk, has modified its policies in order to make available content that was previously restricted. A considerable number of advertisers have either left the platform entirely or significantly reduced the amount of money they are spending as a result of the modification to the policy.
Twitter has the potential to attract new advertisers if it decides to open its doors to cannabis businesses. Up until this point, cannabis companies have had very few opportunities to communicate with users via social media platforms.
According to the announcement made by Twitter, cannabis-related conversation “is larger than the conversation around topics such as pets, cooking, and golf, as well as food and beverage categories including fast food, coffee, and liquor.” This suggests that cannabis-related businesses may be able to reach a large audience on Twitter.
