Last month, we got to see 12 minutes of gameplay from the remake of Resident Evil 4, which showed what players can expect from the game. In addition to new Ashley mechanics, level layouts, cinematics, and, of course, graphics, we also got to see some really strange weather effects that didn’t seem to belong in a modern game.
In particular, it didn’t really look like rain. The drops were big, moved slowly, and looked strangely bright compared to the dark and dull surroundings. It was almost as if they had been painted white on purpose. Players liked the new gameplay, but the rain was compared negatively to GTA Trilogy: Definitive Edition, which is still a terrible game to this day.
Rain Looked Different In Screenshots And Trailers
Also, the rain looked different in different screenshots and trailers. In some, it looked fine, but in others, it looked completely out of place. People paid so much attention to this one issue that they started calling it “raingate,” as if Capcom was part of a huge plot to ruin the idea of rain.
The tweet below confirms the news:
Capcom confirms they're fixing those rain effects in Resident Evil 4 Remake:
“We’ve seen everyone’s reaction to the rain effects, and we are working on a day-one patch to make adjustments”.

After more than a month, we can finally say goodbye to raingate. In an interview with Push Start, Hirabayashi Yoshiaki, a producer at Capcom, said that a day-one patch is being made to fix Resident Evil 4’s broken rain.
He said, “We’ve seen how everyone responds to the rain effects, and we’re working on a day-one patch to make changes.”
Rain isn’t the only new feature in Resident Evil 4 that has caused a stir. Some fans are upset that the new Ashley model doesn’t have a short skirt, and the new escorting system means you can’t do a pervy easter egg that lets you look directly at Ashley’s underwear.
I don’t understand why anyone would be upset that this won’t be in the 2023 remake, but they might be the same people who are mad that Blue Protocol has deep necklines and tight miniskirts in Japan but not anywhere else.
