Users have reported that their usernames were altered for what seems to be no reason at all as a result of the most recent Overwatch 2 maintenance update. One user even received a minus 75% XP penalty without knowing the reason.
Fans appear to have identified the source, so if this has affected you, you may relax. For some unknown reason, the most recent update turned on “streamer mode” for select players, assigning them a meaningless battle tag that is generally used to fend off stream snipers. It is not immediately evident why the upgrade is having these peculiar consequences, but this is just as readily turned off in the preferences.
A few Reddit users who returned after the upgrade to discover that their username had changed to a random string of letters and digits have reported this.

This appears to be an update to Overwatch 2’s streamer protection system as well. Previously, it would be a name with a cast of characters. The fact that it was obvious who was attempting to mask their Gamertag meant that this didn’t truly benefit streamers all that much. Streamers should now be able to blend in a little bit better with other gamers thanks to this new system.
I checked myself by logging in and it does appear that streamer protection has improved. But, if you experience this bug, you should be able to quickly toggle it off in the preferences to restore your original username. At least we are aware that we can remain anonymous if too many competitors memorize our names for incorrect reasons.
Blizzard is now investigating several different areas, not just making the game safer for streamers. After receiving several complaints from fans about games feeling unfair, the developers have also improved matchmaker. Aaron Keller, the director of Overwatch, has also asserted that he believes match quality has increased, which has angered players who do not share his opinion.
