David Szymanski created Iron Lung, a first-person submarine simulation horror game set in 2022. You take control of an unknown criminal as he pilots a rusty little submarine, the “Iron Lung“, over a bloody ocean on a barren moon.
On March 10, 2022, it was released on Microsoft Windows and met with universal acclaim. On December 19, 2022, a port for the Nintendo Switch was made available. Markiplier will direct and star in the film adaption of Iron Lung, which was announced on April 21, 2023.
Iron Lung Gameplay
The player steers a miniature submarine alongside a mute protagonist. The entirety of the game takes place in a single room of the submarine. The frontal navigational equipment is used to steer the submarine. The submarine’s course and location are shown in a straightforward interface.

The sub has no windows, and the player is trapped inside; to explore the game world, they must rely on the camera and their map. Sometimes, the player must pull out the submersible camera and snap some shots to learn more about their immediate environment. Changes in oxygen and pressure are two examples of random events that can occur at any time and significantly impact the game.
New mythology, achievements, in-game locations, and Steam Points Shop products were introduced on June 19, 2022, as part of an update for Iron Lung.
Iron Lung Plot
A mysterious occurrence called the “Quiet Rapture” wipes out every star and habitable planet in the universe in a future where humanity has colonized space. The only people left on Earth live on space stations and starships. The Consolidation of Iron (COI) sends an expedition to the moon AT-5 to ensure humanity’s continued existence. AT-5 is a bleak world that recently developed a vast ocean of blood.
To prove the presence of the resources, the convict is dispatched to pilot a small submarine known as SM-13 or the “Iron Lung” into the trenches of the crimson ocean. Shortly after going under, the main hatch is welded shut, the forward viewport is enclosed in metal, and communications are severed due to the pressure and depth of the ocean.

The inmate is told they will be accessible once they return to the surface, but a note left by the submarine’s previous occupant warns them that they are merely pawns in a bigger game of power and control. The convicted captains the small but robust sub-Iron Lung to safely get through the caves and trenches.
They take blurry pictures of landmarks all over the map with the submarine’s camera. But the photos show more weird and disturbing phenomena, such as abnormal plant growth, rock formations that defy understanding, massive unidentifiable skeletons, and strange, manmade structures that look like stores.
The inmate faces several unexpected difficulties, including an oxygen shortage, steam explosions from the pipes, and a fire in the submarine’s stern. The ship trembles violently as the Iron Lung approaches its target, a mysterious sphere of light.
The convict also attracts the attention of a gigantic unknown marine species, which launches an attack on the Iron Lung, resulting in a severe leak. As the game’s protagonist reaches for the camera controls towards the game’s conclusion, a monster sea creature breaks into the sub, forcing the player back to the title screen.
A post-game text entry explains that the mission and the convict’s deἀth were in vain because there is currently no way to retrieve the remains or images from the wrecked Iron Lung. Despite this, the poem maintains its optimism, claiming that humans will discover a way to stop the Quiet Rapture elsewhere in the universe.
