Final Fantasy 16 has some of the series’ most spectacular battles in history. The game breaks new territory in many ways, notably using the series’ famous summons.
Final Fantasy 16’s Eikons fight off in climactic large-scale battles, each controlled by a Dominant rather than providing a single vigorous assault. Clive Rosfield is the Dominant of Ifrit, and the story of Final Fantasy 16 sees him confront a slew of other Eikons, pulling off a trick previously thought impossible in one of them.

Final Fantasy 16 follows Clive as he attempts to free humanity from the clutches of the Mothercrystals. The crystals are said to be responsible for the world of Valisthea’s magic and to bestow unique talents on select groups of people. The Dominants can control Eikons and utilize their basic skills at will.
Clive was born with the destiny of being the Dominant to the Eikon of Fire, Phoenix. Instead, it materialized in his brother Joshua. Clive obtains a mysterious second Eikon of Fire, Ifrit, after a horrific experience, which he uses to complete his purpose of destroying the Mothercrystals. This task forces Ifrit to confront every Eikon and Dominant in the game, including the formidable dragon Bahamut.
Final Fantasy 16’s Bahamut Casts the Universe’s Strongest Spell
Clive’s mission to eliminate the Crystalline Dominion’s Mothercrystal transports him to Twinside, where he must battle Prince Dion’s Eikon, Final Fantasy’s Bahamut. Few monsters are more fearsome than Bahamut in the Final Fantasy series, as the dragon is frequently portrayed as an enormously strong summon and/or essential plot device.
On the other hand, final Fantasy 16’s Bahamut stands out because the Eikon can cast the most powerful spell in Square Enix history: Zettaflare. Bahamut uses the Zettaflare during the battle with Ifrit and Phoenix.
The spell is a version of Flare, which, together with Holy and Ultima, is one of Final Fantasy’s three most potent spells. However, Flare’s strength can be tripled depending on the user’s power, resulting in attacks like Gigaflare, equivalent to one billion Flares. Bahamut unleashes an attack canonically equal to one thousand million Gigaflares when he casts Zettaflare.

In all of Square Enix’s games, only three spellcasters have ever utilized Zettaflare. Donald Duck uses it to save his comrades from Terranort in Kingdom Hearts 3, Airy uses it to decimate players in Bravely Default (2012), and Bahamut uses it in Final Fantasy 14. Remember that a weaker Terraflare was enough to “reboot” Final Fantasy 14, putting Zettaflare’s overwhelming scope and strength into perspective.

Ifrit Does the Impossible in Final Fantasy 16
During their confrontation with Bahamut from Final Fantasy 16, Ifrit and Phoenix can survive both Gigaflare and its more powerful incarnation, Terraflare, earning the upper hand. Bahamut’s desperation causes the Eikon to drink from the Mothercrystal’s aether, dramatically amplifying its strength before unleashing Zettaflare.

Clive and Joshua are visibly terrified by Bahamut’s sudden might, as Zettaflare’s destructive force can destroy all of Valisthea. Because of their combined might in Ifrit Risen, Joshua and Clive can entirely oppose Zettaflare, initiating a Dragon Ball Z-like conflict in which Ifrit manages to withstand and breakthrough Zettaflare.
The Eikon charges toward the Zettaflare before using his bare hands to block the tremendous burst of electricity. Following a titanic battle in which Ifrit Risen summons all of his Eikonic strength, the Eikon goes one step further, making history again.
After rocketing himself and the Zettaflare back towards Bahamut, Ifrit Risen attacks him with his attack, defeating him and saving Valisthea. Ifrit Risen’s resistance and use of the Zettaflare are both series firsts.
Fans that complete Final Fantasy 16’s conclusion will discover that Ifrit Risen still has more to reveal, and even more formidable adversaries await him after the Crystals are destroyed. Final Fantasy 16 is currently available for the PlayStation 5.
