Detective Pikachu Returns was announced at the Nintendo Direct event on June 21, 2023. Here’s all we know so far about the second episode of the Pokemon spin-off franchise. It’s been seven years since Detective Pikachu first appeared on the Nintendo 3DS, and a lot has changed.
In 2019, a Detective Pikachu film starring Ryan Reynolds was published, and numerous new Pokemon have been found in the main game series.
Detective Pikachu’s second story will now be revealed to Pokemon lovers all across the world. The Pokemon Company and Nintendo have stated that Detective Pikachu Returns will continue the adventures of Pikachu and Tim Goodman. Here’s a rundown of everything we know so far.

Is There a Trailer for Detective Pikachu Returns?
Yes, the first Detective Pikachu Returns trailer, which can be seen below, premiered on June 21 during Nintendo Direct. The second Detective Pikachu game’s trailer included two major characters, Pikachu and Tim Goodman, both of whom returned from the 2016 Detective Pikachu game.
In addition, Mewtwo, Munchlax, Raboot, Luxray, Growlithe, and Intel Xeon appeared in the trailer. Notably, neither of the latter two were in the national Pokedex when the prequel was released. A new Detective Pikachu Returns trailer was then revealed at the August Pokemon Presents.
Detective Pikachu Returns Gameplay and Story Details
Little is known about the gameplay, but it appears to be similar to the original Detective Pikachu for the 3DS in that we can expect to travel around Ryme City as Tim Goodman in his red hoodie looking for clues – and talking to people and Pokémon alike – to solve many mysteries.
We know Mewtwo will return, and the game appears to continue the search for Tim’s father, Harry Goodman, where the 3DS title left off. What is clear is that Detective Pikachu will be making his signature quips and sampling various coffee roasts along the route.

Which Consoles and Platforms Can Play Detective Pikachu Returns?
Detective Pikachu Returns will be available only on the Nintendo Switch. This comes as no surprise given that Nintendo launched The Pokémon Company in 1996.
They’re not about to relinquish control anytime soon, as the series generates significant revenue for the Japanese gaming conglomerate.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet sold over 22.1 million units by the conclusion of the Japanese fiscal year on March 31st. It’ll almost certainly be higher now, thus Pikachu will almost certainly stay put.
Can We Pre-order Detective Pikachu Return?
Detective Pikachu Returns is available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop for £39.99. A physical copy is also available for a similar price on sites such as GAME and Amazon. It’s a shame there isn’t a tie-in model in the same vein as the Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED – but perhaps we’ll see a PikaSwitch when the rumoured Nintendo Switch Pro makes an appearance.
