Alan Wake 2 has launched itself into the conversation for Game of the Year, even though 2023 already has a plethora of public and unannounced competitors. The developer, Remedy Entertainment, proved the 13-year wait for Wake’s comeback was worthwhile with an exclusive playable preview at Summer Game Fest 2023.
In this early demo, FBI agent Saga Anderson is in Bright Falls looking into a string of ritualistic murders. Her relationship with Alan Wake is mysterious, but as she digs deeper, clues emerge, building to a shocking discovery for avid readers.
Remedy wants Alan Wake 2 to have the unsettling atmosphere of a survival horror game rather than a traditional third-person shooter. Saga only had to deal with one or two enemies at a time. Thus, the fighting sequences on the show weren’t as much of a shooting gallery as they were in the first game. However, they were just as dangerous in person, necessitating the cautious use of light to weaken them before any harm could be done with firearms.
When asked about the fighting, Remedy didn’t go too much beyond what was shown in the gameplay trailer at the Summer Game Fest Live delivery. Still, the studio did confirm that Saga’s powers and weaponry may be upgraded. That the fighting has been updated to match modern expectations while maintaining the structure from the original Alan Wake game was demonstrated enough by the demo, which included a pretty cool boss fight.
The investigation parts are the most exciting parts of the game. As an FBI agent, Saga has access to several tools that facilitate gathering evidence and clues, leading to the discovery of new goals and avenues for advancement.
Saga’s Mind Place is a little cottage with a Case Board and other interactive features that can be accessed anytime during the game. The player will organize the clues and information on the Case Board to guide Saga properly. The novel idea gives the player more control over the story’s progression. They will be working alongside Saga to unravel the mystery.
In Mind Place, Saga can profile her topic and think about what drives them and their thinking. In this scenario, the suspect’s trial had gone cold, but the Profiling mechanism allowed her to ask predetermined questions and find a new direction to pursue.
There is some connection between Alan Wake and the central mystery, but I won’t give anything away. All that has to be said is that Saga is not merely a female Alan Wake and is also not a supporting character. The remedy appears to have crafted a two-pronged narrative to introduce newbies to the Bright Falls environment and satisfy long-suffering aficionados.
Alan Wake 2 was graphically impressive and hit all the narrative and mechanical marks of a fascinating preview. The game’s visuals are spectacular, with photo-realistic graphics for the characters and environments and some creative flourishes that will make players question reality. All during the preview, that uneasiness persisted.
