At the 2004 McDonald’s All-American Game, Candace created history by becoming the first woman to win the slam dunk competition, where she bested future NBA stars like J.R. Smith, Rudy Gay, and Josh Smith.
She was the first woman to ever slam dunk in the history of basketball in the state of Illinois, and she helped lead her high school team to back-to-back Class AA state titles. She was also named the Naismith and Gatorade Prep Player of the Year in both of those categories in a row.
When she enrolled at the University of Tennessee, she created more headlines by becoming the first female player in NCAA history to slam dunk and the first female player to slam dunk twice in the same game. Her final season saw her lead the team in both scoring (20.6 ppg) and rebounding.

Candace Parker’s NBA Journey
After being selected by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2008 WNBA Draft, Parker promptly set a new rookie record with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists in her very first game, a loss to the Phoenix Mercury.
In May and July of 2008, she was recognized as the Hanns-G “Go Beyond” rookie of the month. In addition, Parker was named the 2008 Hann’s-G MVP and Rookie of the Year.

She participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics with the US National Women’s Basketball Team, where she won a gold medal. In 2011, Parker had a knee injury that forced him to miss the rest of the season.
She, along with twenty other women, has been selected by the U.S.A. Basketball Women’s National Team Player Selection Committee to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Parker won the WNBA MVP award and scored 15.3 points per game en route to her first title in 2016. In 2021, Parker was recognized as one of the league’s all-time greats by being inducted into The W25.
Candace Parker Family
On April 19, 1986, Parker entered this world in St. Louis, Missouri. Shelden Williams, a collegiate and professional basketball player for Duke and the NBA, began playing with Parker in 2008. They tied the knot in 2008, and Lailaa Nicole Williams was born in 2009.
Williams filed for divorce from his wife of eight years, alleging “irreconcilable differences,” and the couple officially split up in 2016. Parker and Anna Petrakova announced their engagement in 2019, and the couple welcomed a son in 2022.
Parker and her daughter became part-owners of Angel City FC in October 2020. This Los Angeles-based team will join the NWSL in 2022.
